Lightning strike throws 9-year-old off couch

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS46) -

Around 7:30 on Monday, Deandre Connell said he was doing homework when a bolt of lightning struck a tree outside the living room window. The current traveled through the ground, blowing him off the couch.

"It was really scary," Deandre said. "It started raining, and lightning was everywhere and it came through the window and struck my leg and I fell on the ground. Then I threw up everywhere and my leg started to hurt."

Deandre's mom, Rhea Connell, said she tried to call 911 but the phone was dead. The charge was so powerful it knocked out their electricity and fried their television sets. Connell said she was standing next to her son when she saw the flash, heard the boom and watched her son be thrown off the couch.

"The current went right through his leg," Connell said. "He was lucky he didn't get burnt. It hit the couch and bounced off and started going through his leg."

Connell said first responders arrived and stabilized Deandre. He was checked out at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston and then released.

"He will have pain off and on," Connell said.

The fourth-grader didn't go to school on Tuesday, but said he is excited to get back to class tomorrow. He said he didn't think the story was something he wanted to tell his friends.

"I was thinking 'how did I survive that?'" Deandre said.

Connell said during the next storm the family will be riding it out in the hallway.
