(RNN) - A man was shot and killed by police after wielding a knife outside a store four miles from Ferguson, MO. Where the incident took place is under a different police jurisdiction than Ferguson.

St. Louis City Police told local media the man tried to steal two energy drinks from the 5-Star Market convenience store at 1 p.m. CT. The owner argued with the man, and police were called.

When police arrived, the 23-year-old African American male refused to put down the weapon and tried to attack the two responding police officers. St. Louis City Police Chief Sam Dotson said the suspect was holding the knife with an overhand grip.

According to Dotson, the suspect turned to the police and said, "Shoot me, kill me."

No officers were injured, and the two involved in the shooting are off the street and on administrative duty.

Police are checking to see if there is surveillance video in the store.

A city alderwoman witnessed the incident, who confirms the suspect did not respond to verbal commands, and was acting erratically.

A crowd is reported to be gathering - some chanting "Hands up, don't shoot!" Tensions are high after Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9 in nearby Ferguson.

After addressing the media, Dotson is addressing the crowd to give them the information the police have gathered, and to keep tensions low.

"I want this message to be out truthfully and quickly as possible," Dotson said.

When asked about possibly using stun guns instead of firearms, Dotson said that, "At the end of the day, the officer should be able to go home."
