Animal Services has confirmed a fifth rabies case in New Hanover County this year.
According to the sheriff's office, a dead raccoon was found in a yard when a pet cat was let outside. The owner was unaware the raccoon was in the yard before letting the cat outside.
The cat was potentially exposed to the raccoon and its owner handled it afterwards and was also potentially exposed to saliva.
Luckily, the cat was current with its rabies vaccine and has been re-boostered.
The state lab notified Animal Services Monday the raccoon had tested positive for rabies.
