WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Community leaders came together Tuesday morning to encourage the fight against youth violence in Wilmington.

The Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) on the Prevention of Youth Violence was formed in 2008 to help put an end to teen violence in Wilmington.

The organization hosted its strategic breakfast Tuesday at PPD headquarters in downtown Wilmington.

District Attorney Ben David and Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo both spoke about the need for community partnerships as the city continues its efforts to thwart community crime involvement.

Jana Jones Halls, Executive Director of the Blue Ribbon Commission, spoke about recent successes the BRC has had. Those victories include the establishment of a free summer program to keep kids off the streets

Halls said that the organization's goal moving forward is to continue forming new partnerships that will help improve safety, education, health and wellness amongst Wilmington children.

"The issue with youth violence is so complicated and interwoven with so many issues that if we can slowly attack one at a time and see success within that, we know that we're doing our job," Halls said.

Specifically she wants to create safe havens for teens in the Youth Enrichment Zone (YEZ), a section of the north side of Wilmington identified for crime concerns.

Additionally she wants to facilitate the development of leadership skills and academic success for youths in the YEZ.

In the past year the BRC has hosted community events such as the Yam Jam and a free summer program for kids living around the YEZ.

Halls encourages anyone who wants to volunteer with their organization to contact the BRC online through this website.
