Popular Brookside custard shop facing uncertain future

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Customers of a popular Brookside staple are fighting to keep it in place.

Foo's Fabulous Frozen Custard's lease expired, and its renewal was denied.

The custard shop, located at 6235 Brookside Plaza, has served its treats at that location for the past 26 years.

Saadia Mahmood introduced her husband to Foo's years ago when they were dating.

"So it is kind of close to us," Mahmood said. "We heard that they could have its lease expiring. So we thought, 'let's go ahead and have some ice cream with the babies.'"

Brookside residents and shoppers are worried that this could just be the beginning of other locally owned shops in the area being pushed out.

They've started a "Keep Foo's in Brookside" Facebook group. More than 3,000 people, who have joined in support of the custard shop, worry a chain could take Foo's spot, crippling Brookside's character.

"We like the local shops and small shops and the places that kind of make us feel like a community than living in a strip mall," John Weber said.

Weber joined the Facebook group, and he shares the fear that a chain restaurant could take Foo's spot.

"What I fear is going to happen is just what happened to the Plaza, where all the local stores one by one went out of business and all the chain restaurants took away the character and charm of the Plaza," he said.

Weber hopes the management reconsiders the lease so Foo's won't have to close its doors.

Owner Betty Bremser said she is in negotiations with the new owners, First Washington Realty LLC of Bethesda, Maryland.

First Washington Realty did not return calls to KCTV5 News for comment.

Bremser released a statement on Foo's Facebook page:

"Because we want our beloved customers, friends and partners in our community to be in the know, Foo's in Brookside would like to share the following: We are presently in lease negotiations with our Brookside landlord. Please know that we are doing everything we can to stay right where we are in Brookside and have been for the past 26 years. We will keep you posted. Thanks for your outpouring of support."

Bremser doesn't know when agreement will be reached but there is another Foo's location in Leawood, KS.
