WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Some UNCW students hit the books early to help their classmates get a leg up this semester. Eleven students went through a three day hands-on training to become peer educators.

"We work very hard on our programs to tailor them to student specifically," said peer educator, Hillary Scott.  "I love it when I see people making changes in their life because of it."

By using the MyPlate on campus website, peer educators are able to give students the tools needed to create healthy meals.

Courtney Simmons, campus dietitian, said the peer educators main goals are to debunk myths and prevent students from falling into fad diets.

"You can definitely have foods that might not be as healthy for you but in moderation," Simmons said. "We want to provide education so students can make their healthy choices, and not follow the fads or other things that might be dangerous to their health."

Starting next week, peer educators will into residence halls and classrooms to promote healthy eating.
