TABOR CITY, NC (WECT) -

The head quarterback of the South Columbus High School football team was injured in a wreck Friday afternoon, hours before the BB&T Football Jamboree that serves as the kickoff of football season in the region.

The wreck happened just before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Hwy. 701 and Hilburn Road in the Williams Township area, according to Trooper R. Capps of the Highway Patrol.

He said it appeared Chase Gore, the football player, crossed the center line in his white pick-up truck and struck the back of a tractor trailer that was headed to Tabor City.

Alfred McDonald, who was driving the big rig, and Gore were transported by ambulance to Columbus Regional Healthcare System, where they were listed in stable condition at 3:30 p.m., a hospital spokeswoman said.

Highway 701 was blocked for at least an hour and a half.

South Columbus will participate in the Football Jamboree, according to Head Coach Kyle Hutchison.
