OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) -
Council members in Oak Island will revisit the discussion of large beach homes on the island.
Town leaders voted in May to limit the size of all single-family residences to 5,000 square feet and have a maximum of seven bedrooms. They also decided at that time to require builders to have one parking space for every bedroom in the house.
The changes came after concerns these large vacation homes were becoming mini-hotels, putting a strain on town resources.
Now, town staff is saying the parking restrictions are leading to more vegetation being removed to accommodate the bigger parking lots.
The town's planning board recommended in June relaxing the requirement to allow one parking space for every two bedrooms in a four bedroom home, and one parking space for each additional bedroom.
Town Leaders will discuss the suggestions Tuesday night.
