CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) -
Council members in Carolina Beach approved contributing to keep bus service to the beach, and moving forward with a plan to improve the boardwalk.
Council voted to supporting the WAVE bus route from Monkey Junction to Carolina Beach.
After one year of service on route 301, ridership has increased from 500 trips per month to 1,200, according to numbers provided by WAVE. Council members voted to contribute no more than $8,500 a year for the service.
The town leaders also approved awarding a contract for the boardwalk improvement project.
The town received three bids for the project, with the lowest from Civil Works Contracting at $1.6 million which is just below the town's budget of $1.7 million.
Town leaders want to replace the existing boardwalk, and renovate the existing stage area with a new roof. The plans would also call for expanding the ramps to the beach to 10 feet.
