NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon will ask commissioners Monday night for money to add security wire mesh partitions to four housing units inside the jail.

The fences are already installed in other areas of the jail to cut down on the number of inmates who jump from the second floor.

Given that most attempts occur feet first, it's believed that jumping is largely intended to sustain just enough injury to warrant outside medical care, and not immediate death.

Five inmates have jumped off the 10-foot ledge inside the housing units since the jail has been opened.

McMahon will be asking for a little over $200,000 for the added security measure.
