SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – One woman has been charged with first degree murder after stabbing her father to death Sunday morning, according to the Scotland County Sheriff's Office.

A friend was driving Ashley Walters, 23, and her father, Robert Earl Walters, home from a family party when the two got into an argument, according to Captain Edwards with the SCSO.

"From what we have learned, a call came through that started an argument between Ashley and her father," said Capt. Edwards.

The driver pulled over on Stewartsville Cemetery Road, stopped the car, and Walters and her father continued to argue.

"Once they got out of the car, the physical altercation continued on the side of the road. A knife was produced and he received the wounds that ultimately led to his death," explained Capt. Edwards.

According to Captain Edwards, at some point during the altercation, Walters grabbed a knife and began to stab her father multiple times.

Walters and the driver left the scene. They drove to her mother's house where law enforcement was then contacted.

"We initially went to the home where the call came from. From the story she told, another officer was sent out to Stewartsville Cemetery Road where he was located," said Capt. Edwards.

By the time deputies got on scene, Robert Earl Walters had passed away.

Walters is being held at the Scotland County Detention Center. Her first appearance in front of a judge is scheduled for Tuesday.

"This will be held so she can understand her rights, the charges against her, and give her the opportunity to have a lawyer," explained Capt. Edwards.

The murder case is very unusual for the Scotland County Sheriff's Office since the victim and alleged attacker are so closely related, and the fact a suspect was taken into custody so quickly.

Scotland County has one of the lowest crime rates in the state. It is bordered by Robeson County which has one of the highest rates of violent crimes.

An autopsy was performed on Robert Earl Walters to determine his exact cause of death.
