Dayton shocks Wilmington 2-1

Hammerheads Press Release

Wilmington, NC - The Dayton Dutch Lions took victory over the Wilmington Hammerheads at Legion Stadium on Saturday night. Dayton's Jenneh Karamba lifted the Lions to a 2-1 victory over the Hammerheads following a penalty kick in stoppage time.

The Lions took an early lead following a goal in the 18th minute after Hammerheads defender Ashani Fairclough overstepped allowing space for forward Joe Broekhuizen to make a short breakaway that forced Wilmington goalkeeper Brad Stuver of his line to challenge. Drew Ruggles followed closely behind with an attempt for the Hammerheads, lofting the ball just over William's head with the intention of having it fall behind the goal line, but instead drifted just over the crossbar.

Cody Arnoux had several attempts on Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams Saturday night before the ball finally found the back of the net to equalize in the 24th minute off a reverse pass from Fairclough at the top of the penalty area.

Dayton had several attempts in the second half that left the Hammerheads defense scrambling for position with attempts by Karamba and midfielder David Clemens. Hammerheads forward Sunny Jane was close to increasing the score in the 87th minute after hitting the ball off the right post which deflected and then hit the left post, but did not hold enough pull to cross the line for a definite goal.

The Lions pulled away with the 2-1 victory in stoppage time following Hammerheads contact in the box which resulted in a penalty kick taken by Karamba. Dayton's victory followed a 2-2 draw against the Charleston Battery on Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium.

The Hammerheads are scheduled to travel north to take on the New York Red Bulls Reserve at 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday, August 15 at Lubetkin Field. Fans in Wilmington are encouraged to join the Hammerheads organization for a live Watch Party on Friday at Buffalo Wild Wings on Old Eastwood Road to cheer on the team. Food and drink specials available.
