Charges to be filed against Bedford Township teen who faked abduction

ECORSE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Police say charges will be filed against a Bedford Township teen who falsely claimed she was abducted.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office now says an alleged abduction of 18-year-old Hayley Turner last week never happened, and police say they're frustrated that potentially thousands of dollars and many hours of work were spent investigating what they call a "made-up story."

The sheriff's office said Turner went missing just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 31. Turner was on the phone with a friend while driving back from a Family Video store when she reportedly saw a man lying in the grass near the road.

While still on the phone, Turner told her friend that an unknown male person had a gun and that he was following her. The call was then disconnected.

The sheriff's office says the friend then called Hayley's father. Her father went to the area and found Hayley's car idling at the intersection around 10:10 p.m.

During a neighborhood canvass, a neighbor told deputies they had seen a sedan with its parking lights activated. This vehicle was parked along Dean Road at Crabb Road. It was reported one of the running lights was not working.

Around 9 a.m. Friday morning, a person who lives in the area called the sheriff's office and said that he or she had seen a white male, 18 to 24 years old, wearing brown khakis and a blue shirt with a girl matching Hayley's description near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Erie Road around 4 a.m. Friday.

At 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Ecorse Police Department said that Turner had been found alive. The sheriff says Turner is "doing fine" when it comes to her health. He says she was found on a porch in Ecorse, MI asking to use a phone to call her family.

Detectives spent hours interviewing Turner after she was found. They say she was unable to describe her alleged kidnapper, and that she became confused during questioning. Eventually she confessed to the sheriff's office that the abduction never took place.

Ecorse Police say Turner was not alone in this fake abduction, but they have not released information on the person she was with. They did say, however, that she was never in any danger.

"She could not do this alone," said Ecorse Police Chief Mike Moore. "She was never out of the company of a [friend]."

The case is now in the hands of the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office.
