ORANGEBURG, SC (WCSC) -
Orangeburg deputies say a mother who left her 2-year-old at a home where they discovered methamphetamines days later has been arrested in Orangeburg County.
Amanda Leigh Vosburg, 24, was wanted for leaving her child at a home where two people were arrested on methamphetamine charges, Orangeburg Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said.
"Our investigation indicates that Vosburg was receiving financial assistance from the Department of Social Services Food Stamp program to feed two children. When officers determined that one of the dependent children was actually being cared for by a grandmother, a warrant for food stamp fraud was also obtained," Ravenell said.
Deputies say that on Aug. 2, Amanda Leigh Vosburg, 24, left her daughter in the custody of a resident of a Binnicker Bridge Road home. Vosburg told the person she would return in four to five hours to pick up the child, but never returned, police say.
The caregiver tried to reach the child's relatives and another friend to take care of the toddler, but no one would take the child, deputies say, so the caregiver took the child to the Bamberg County Department of Social Services. Bamberg County DSS notified the Orangeburg Sheriff's Office.
Vosburg is wanted for unlawful conduct toward a child, according to Orangeburg Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. Investigators also say that Vosburg "Facebooked" a person she does not know and told her she "could have the child."
“This is a heartbreaking story and a far too common scene about a child that was shuffled around, abandoned, and neglected because her mother simply doesn’t care," Ravenell said. "Narcotics not only affect the user but also all family members. This child deserves better and this office will prosecute all those involved in her mistreatment."
Officers responded to drug complaints at the same house on Thursday and found methamphetamines in the home and in the personal belongings of 41-year-old Christy M. Kinsey, who was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, Ravenell said. Deputies also arrested 29-year-old Fran Nicole Roberts, who was present in the home at the time, on an outstanding family court bench warrant, but also charged her with possession of methamphetamine after deputies discovered the drug in a makeup case in her possession, Ravenell said.
Ravenell says his department is still investigating where Vosburg had been since she dropped off her child at the home on Aug. 2. She is scheduled to appear before an Orangeburg magistrate on Thursday morning.
