SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
A rape suspect is behind bars after police sought the public's help and then spotted and arrested him downtown.
Officers from Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan's Downtown Precinct arrested Alfred Colquitt, 47, on Thursday afternoon and charged him with rape and aggravated assault stemming from two separate incidents.
"A woman that is 77-years-old and is basically beat up in broad daylight," said Sweet Melissa's Owner TC Pipkin. "We got to be more forceful in this situation."
SCMPD was searching for a man that brutally attacked an elderly woman on Monday in her downtown Savannah business. Now the family and fellow business owners want the attacker behind bars.
Family members said Coquitt attacked 77-year-old Jean. He was also seen harassing patrons and business owners in the days leading up to this brutal attack.
In fact, Pipkin, owner of Sweet Melissa's, usually stands post on the corner outside of his business to help prevent crimes like this from happening. Pipkin said he has seen Colquitt several times before, but this time it seemed as though he was in a rage.
When Pipkin heard about Jean's attack, he knew exactly who was responsible and began to circulate photos to warn others. Pipkin said there are too many crimes happening downtown and they need more help from police.
"Saturday night, I saw the man and he was stalking my neighbors. I watched him because they were in the process of closing," said Pipkin. "He noticed me and saw me observe him. I went back to my corner. He was trying to talk to different women on the street. Then he walked into my hamburger side and and I told him you need to leave. He cursed me out, threatened my life."
In addition to the downtown attack on Monday, Police say Colquitt raped a woman on Wednesday on the South Side.
Colquitt is charged with rape and three counts of aggravated assault.
