Business burglaries are discouraging owners

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Burglaries at the Autoland Custom service garage, behind David Smith Autoland on East Oglethorpe, are overwhelming.

Autoland Custom Service Manager Shane Knight said "We find evidence of people being inside the cars and inside the fence at least twice a week."

Despite the fence and alarms, thieves often damage their customers cars. And Knight says the cost of those crimes usually comes right out of his pocket, saying if he turned them all in to his insurance company, they would dump him. "Because the state requires we have insurance, and if we lose our insurance we lose our business license. So as a business owner we have to bear the brunt of it."

Albany Police admit they are frustrated as well, and ask the business owners to be patient.

"We're working hard to solve these business burglaries. Detectives are even doing extra details. We have officers who are hitting the streets on four wheelers. So they are doing the extra work just to get suspects developed," said APD Media Manager Phyllis Banks.

Knight said he knows other business owners are concerned these repeated crimes could put them out of business. "For Albany to grow and thrive, you've got to have small businesses. And we're dying."

Albany Police say they understand and they are doing all they can to stop these rash of break ins. "The crooks are just getting smarter and we are just going to have to stay on top of it," Banks said.

Frustration for both the business owners and the cops, wanting to stop these crooks.

Albany Police urge the business owners to stay diligent. Make sure their alarms and surveillance cameras are working, and the Police want the owners to know they are doing all they can to help stop these crimes.
