ECHO LAKE, MT (KECI/CNN) – In Montana, a young boy is recovering from an otter attack.

Montana Wildlife officials say two adult otters bit the child several times as he swam in the lake.

He was taken to the hospital and later released.

People in the area say they didn’t know otters attacked people.

“I’m very surprised. I didn’t think they could even bite,” resident Kaydee Jensen said.

Wildlife officials say otter attacks are rare, but when they happen it’s usually because the animal is protecting its young.
