Georgia highway safety officials push school bus safety

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  State officials say they are concerned by increases in injuries and deaths involving school buses.

As school resumes, they urge drivers to use caution around school buses.

Monday afternoon a driver passing a Dougherty County school bus struck the bus at the intersection of East Society Avenue and Swift Street.

None of the 7 students on the bus was hurt.

Governor's Office of Highway Safety officials say buses deliver kids safely, but motorists around the buses are the concern.

Governor's Office of Highway Safety Director Harris Blackwood said "We don't injure many students on buses. We injure students getting on and off of buses.  And largely it's because the people being distracted.  Not paying attention."

Blackwood said it's important for all drivers to be aware of the buses and students and use extra caution to protect them.
