NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will be conducting an investigation to learn more about what caused a sewer overflow in New Hanover County.

Officials said the overflow happened Sunday morning at the Loader Pump Station near the Windy Hills subdivision in the southern part of the county.

About 15,000 gallons of wastewater reached a tributary of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Crews believe torrential rains led to the overflow. In situations with continued heavy rainfall, the wastewater spilled can be significantly diluted in a short period of time.

CFPUA Environmental Management staff members have conducted water quality monitoring in the area and the incident has been reported to the North Carolina Division of Water Quality.
