WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Construction has yet to begin on Wilmington Fire Station No. 3 on Cinema Drive, but already the Wilmington Fire Department is asking city leaders for more money. Tuesday night City Council approved $1 million to move forward with the project.

The project on Cinema Drive will require another $1,093,300, according to a request by the Wilmington City Manager.

City officials said the Wilmington Fire Department officials requested an extra bay, a meeting room, and more sleeping space in the new station.

City council had to approve the funding appropriation before anything was final.

Some firefighters have previously spoken out against the move to replace four older stations with two new ones. Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said that he has yet to see a reason why the replacement effort is a bad move.

"Obviously others have shared their concerns with the city council. But I haven't seen any evidence per se that refutes what the chief has shared with us which is basically the same level of service with a reduced number of stations," Saffo said.

The total construction cost for the station now totals $3.4 million.

The project is all part of the Wilmington Fire Department's plan to reduce the total number of stations in Wilmington from 11 to 9.
