WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Wilmington City Council spent part of their Monday morning agenda briefing talking about the "role" each council member plays on separate elected committees like the WAVE Transit Board and Cape Fear Public Utility Authority Board.

The conversation came about after some council members recently voted to temporarily stop work on the Independence Boulevard extension project. Those council members, Laura Padgett and Dr. Earl Sheridan, sit on the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization Board.

Mayor Bill Saffo said the council members serving other boards need to represent not only their own personal beliefs, but what is best for the City of Wilmington.

Saffo proposed that city staffers accompany council members to separate board meetings.

"We thought it was imperative that on some of these boards we should have staff people taking notes, making sure that those notes are disseminated to all of the council members," Saffo said.

Council member Neil Anderson was one of the elected officials who cried foul when the WMPO voted to halt the Independence Boulevard project. He said the elected leaders will have to use good judgment when serving on various boards in the future.

"Should we report back on every single thing that happens at a committee meeting?" Anderson questioned. "There's gotta be some judgment call as to what is gonna have a major impact, something that's a critical decision."

Saffo said he wants the elected leaders to report back to council before any major policy decisions are made.
