LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirmed that a black bear was hit and killed on I-75 in Lowndes County.

It happened just after 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30th around the 18 mile marker.

A DNR representative for the Valdosta area said the bear is likely the same bear that was spotted near the mall on Sunday night, July 27th and early Monday morning on the 28th.

GSP troopers responding to the scene Wednesday night said three cars were involved in the collision.

"Once they got to the scene, they identified it as a large black bear," said post commander Carl Taylor, with the Valdosta GSP. "DNR was notified of the bear and later came to the scene and retrieved the bear."

Taylor added that if you do hit an animal while driving, get your car off the road if possible and be very careful about approaching the animal because it may still be alive and may try to attack.
