WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Wilmington City Council discussed Monday the future of the Independence Boulevard extension project. The massive roadway project has been talked about by city leaders since 1972.

The $152 million project would further extend Independence Boulevard to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and alleviate traffic congestion on other major thoroughfares like College Road.

Some council members recently voiced their displeasure that work was temporarily halted on the project.

City council members met with representatives from the NCDOT Monday. The representatives made a presentation to the council that included a video showcasing the future of Wilmington roadways with graphic designs.

They said that right now the funding situation for the project is uncertain.

Council member Earl Sheridan voiced concern that the construction of the project would have a very negative impact on some of Wilmington's urban communities.

The DOT representatives are planning a public workshop with the council where aspects of project will be further discussed and debated.
