BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The man who founded many of the charter schools in southeastern North Carolina resigned from his position on the state's Charter School Advisory Board this week. Baker Mitchell is the founder of schools like Leland's Charter Day School and Douglass Academy in Wilmington.

We first reported two years ago that Mitchell was on the board that regulates the state's charter schools.

While Mitchell's service on the board was not in violation of any state ethics rules, his critics have continually questioned his ability to be impartial, since the board makes decisions that directly impact Mitchell's schools.

Baker Mitchell's brief resignation letter to Senator Phil Berger says that his busy schedule running charter schools in our area is what prompted his resignation.

According to published reports, Mitchell's fellow advisory board member, Paul Norcross, resigned on the same day. Norcross has also come under fire for serving on the advisory board while running schools regulated by that board.

Norcross's resignation letter to Senator Berger is more telling than Mitchell's - saying that he was tired of being "targeted and vilified" and that there "comes a point in which it is no longer worth it when your energy is focused on fending off attacks."

Mitchell has faced public, statewide scrutiny in recent weeks for refusing to disclose his salary, despite the fact that charter schools are funded with public money. We have been unable to reach him for comment this week about his resignation.

Senator Berger has reportedly appointed replacements to fill Mitchell and Norcross's unexpired terms on the Charter School Advisory Board, but calls to his office for details have not been returned.
