Residents coping with lack of water

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Residents of south Nashville who are without water Wednesday after a water line break are coping with the situation the best they can.

There was a steady flow of residents at Hillsboro High School Wednesday night to pick up a case of water provided by the city to those who are without.

Most people said they were grateful for the case of water, but said little or no water will make for a tough night.

Jefferson Jarvis' family lost water earlier today. He said the case of water he picked up will help, but they may still choose to stay somewhere else, other than home, for the night.

"I'm frustrated," said Jarvis. "I'm not too upset. It's no one's fault. It just happens. It's one of those things."

More than 15,000 Metro water customers turned on faucets with little or no water pressure because of a broken water main at the Thompson Lane pumping station.

The 30-inch water main connects the Thompson Lane pumping station to several others, which provides water to Green Hills, Forest Hills and Oak Hill, along with the Crieve Hall area.

While teams work to restore water for thousands, members of the Office of Emergency Management are handing it out for free at Hillsboro High and Crieve Hall Elementary schools.

"We learned this during the flood how important drinking water is to people, and we continued that as a part of our process," said OEM assistant chief Charles Shannon.

Jesse Van Volkenburgh lives a few blocks from Hillsboro High and is facing a night with a dry tap.

"Earlier a friend of mine went somewhere where there is water and bought us some, and I've been through that," said Volkenburgh. "I was glad to see this is available."

If you can't make it to one of the water stations at Hillsboro or Crieve Hall, the Office of Emergency Management said to call 615-862-8750. The water is only for the affected neighborhoods.
