NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Some New Hanover County teens wanted to help out their fellow students this summer by collecting books. The teens have collected more than 3,500 books since June.

Ashley High School Senior Kaylie Kirkwood got some of her friends together to go door-to-door to get people to donate books.

"The summer before your senior year was really the last chance to make a difference in your community before you go off to college and start your new life," Kirkwood explained. "So I really looked into myself to find out what I was really passionate about, and I found that that was books and reading."

This past weekend, the students delivered the books to Sunset Park Elementary, Mary C. Williams Elementary, Snipes Academy, Solomon Towers and Lifeline Pregnancy Center.

"This starts the foundation for students to do well in school so the next generation can do better," Kirkwood said. "I think they have to start with a concrete foundation in finding that one book that makes you love reading can really make a difference."
