WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department arrested a man after responding to a call about a woman being dragged down the sidewalk in the 200 block of Market Street.

According to the WPD, officers were on Market Street around 9 p.m. Friday looking for seat belt violations when they received a call from a witness saying a woman was being dragged down the sidewalk by a suspect.

Officers were able to locate the suspect, 50-year-old David Earl Malpass, and placed him under arrest.

An investigation into the incident showed that Malpass chased the victim when she got out of her car and was able to grab her, choke her, and then drag her down the street.

Malpass attempted to kick the window out of the vehicle that officers placed him in during his arrest.

Officers charged Malpass with assault by strangulation on a female.
