OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) -

The Coast Guard rescued 10 people stranded aboard a 22-foot pontoon boat that began taking on water Thursday morning.

The boaters were traveling to Bald Head Island when the boat began taking on water from waves as they attempted to cross the Cape Fear River entrance. One boater fell overboard.

The Coast Guard was notified of the distressed boaters just before 11 a.m. Officials diverted two Coast Guard boat crews out of Oak Island, who happened to be training in the area, to assist the boaters.

The Coast Guard crews located the pontoon boat and rescued the one boater in the water. Crewmen transferred the remaining boaters to their vessel and took the survivors to their Oak Island station.

The Coast Guard used pumps to dewater the pontoon boat and towed it back to the Oak Island station.

No injuries to the boaters were reported.
