LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Jefferson County Public Schools has released a master list of needed school supplies to give parents and students a heads-up and a head start, so that children may begin the 2014-15 school year ready to learn August 13.
JCPS says parents should wait for the schools to release finalized lists before buying school supplies.
"Schools have received this fundamentals list to distribute to families with some variances in details, such as the color and style of items," JCPS Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens said in an email sent to JCPS staff. "Principals will order additional classroom supplies based on teacher requests, and the district will provide advisement and budgetary support as needed."
The list's draft comes following a management performance review that State Auditor Adam Edelen conducted this spring. The review "supported a district desire to ensure school supply lists are consistent fair and reasonable," Dr. Hargens' email continues. "These items include notebooks, folders, pencils and other essentials."
"This is part of an in-depth process in which we are also studying high school supply requests," Dr. Hargens' email concludes. "Our goal, as always, is to align district practices with what is best for the students and families we serve. We know this is a vital step in the right direction."
