Many neighbors on Ewingdale Drive in Nashville were asleep just after midnight Thursday. Others were awakened by police sirens and flashing lights after one of their neighbors was shot on his front porch.
Jay, who didn't want Channel 4 to use his last name, lives closeby.
"I kinda wanted to make sure that my kids and everybody in my household was OK, make sure the doors were locked," he said.
Jay said this kind of activity isn't the norm in his neighborhood.
Just before midnight, Metro Nashville Police say 26-year-old Nathaniel Zumwalt was coming home when someone approached him and demanded something. When Zumwalt kept walking, the suspect shot him right at his front door. The gunman got away on foot.
Zumwalt is recovering at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after being shot in his side.
Police are calling this an attempted robbery.
"In this day and time it would be kind of bold to do something like that in such a close-knit community," Jay said.
Police roped off another home across he street after K-9s tracked a scent there. They issued a search warrant at the home and have talked to a person of interest, but they're not calling this person a suspect.
"You've got to kinda be on the lookout for strangers and people that aren't normally frequenting this area," Jay said.
The neighborhood has two high-crime areas nearby. Neighbors are fearful and uneasy, and several of the residents Channel 4 talked to wouldn't go on camera out of fear of retaliation.
"I'm actually going to be calling ahead and letting people know that I'm coming home so that I won't be stuck out on the porch," Jay said.
Now, they're hoping someone is brought to justice.
"I hope they catch him and take care of that because it would put this community at ease," Jay said.
