BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Investigators are calling one man a hero, after another fire on Shell Point Road in Supply.

Officials say two male occupants were home at the time of the fire.

Kyle Schnabel was getting ready for bed when he smelled smoke coming from his living room.

He quickly realized that his home was on fire and his elderly roommate was still asleep.

Schnabel, who has a broken foot, climbed out of his own window, broke the window to his roommate's room and pulled the man to safety.

"I just thought of his safety. Like I said, if I would have left him alone then that would have been a death sentence," said Schnabel. "I had to make sure that he was safe. It's scary. You can't really think. You just make a decision and go with it and hope it's the right one."

Both victims were taken to Brunswick Novant Medical Center for smoke inhalation and minor trauma.

Schnabel has since been released and is now staying with friends. His roommate, Randy Chadwick, was transferred to a hospital in Chapel Hill where he is still recovering.

Officials also say a dog escaped the fire okay; however, a cat in the home had to be rescued by firefighters and was resuscitated on the scene. There's been no word on the cat's condition.

Officials say the fire has been ruled accidental and was started in the electrical wiring of the home.
