NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon released a statement Monday saying he is confident that jail personnel involved with the death of former Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett acted in accordance to policies and procedures.

An internal review was conducted by the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office after Hewett died in jail after an apparent altercation.

Sheriff McMahon said the internal review looked at documents, audio, and video recordings as well as witness interviews, to come to the conclusion that jail personnel involved acted in accordance with Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.

The evidence the Sheriff's Office and District Attorney reviewed will be made available after the SBI has concluded their investigation.

"I can say with confidence the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office personnel acted appropriately and professionally at all times. Mr. Hewett's death is tragic, and our prayers go out to his family," McMahon said.
