WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
Cape Fear Community College has been approved to begin offering a new health care training program beginning this fall.
Cardiovascular sonography, the new one-year program, will prepare students to become certified in echocardiography.
An echocardiographer is a trained technologist who employs sonogram technology to provide diagnostic imaging of the heart. Technologists gather information about the heart's structure, function, pressures and rhythm.
According to CFCC's
lead sonography instructor Kellee Stacks, CFCC chose to develop the
program based on input from various health care providers in the region and
employment data from national sources.
According to Stacks, the region's aging population is driving the need for more qualified echocardiographers.
Existing general sonography students will have the opportunity to specialize in echocardiography, which will help with their marketability to employers.
The deadline to apply for the new program is July 28 and classes start Aug. 15.
