WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

What happens when you mix liquid nitrogen with 1,500 ping pong balls? A bunch of happy middle schoolers!

The Wilmington Academy of Arts & Sciences is holding their annual science camp this week.

With the help of Airgas, kid's grades 6th through 8th are getting hands on experience making bottle rockets and blowing up ping pong balls.

"It just exploded!" exclaimed Daniel Johnson, a rising 6th grader. "All of them just flew out everywhere! I wasn't expecting it at all.  I thought one or two would fly out and this was just amazing!"

Not only was it amazing, but the kids said seeing the experiment in real life gave them more information than they could have got from their textbooks.

"Of course learning about it is cool too, but actually experiencing it is more fun,"explained Brooke Sanderford, a rising 7th grader. "It gives us a visual experience and it's something you can't really learn from reading about it."

Lisa Giacomelli, the camp instructor, said she would like to incorporate more of these experiments into the school year, but it's a little harder with larger class sizes, which makes these experiments perfect for the small summer groups.

She said there's nothing more important than seeing these kids leave with smiles on their faces and excited to come back.

"You know I worry about the test scores and all of those other things, but if I can get these kids walking out at the end of the day pumped to come back, and thinking about science in a different way," explained Giacomelli.  "That means way more than any score on a test ever would."

The science summer camp wraps up Friday with the kids attempting to walk on water!
