WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department were dispatched to the scene of a man reportedly assaulting a woman in the 200 block of Colwell Avenue just before 9 a.m. Monday.

According to the WPD, after officers were initially dispatched, additional callers informed police that the suspect was also shooting at the victim.

Officers responded and located the suspect, 19-year-old Diquelle Jashaun Sweet, walking east on the 2500 block of Wrightsville Avenue.

After a brief struggle, officers arrested Sweet and charged him with assault on a female, communicating threats, possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon as a minor, going armed to the terror of the public, discharging firearm in city limits, and resisting arrest.

Sweet is currently being held in the New Hanover County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond and is expected in court Tuesday.

The female victim was not injured during the incident.
