New Hanover County Commissioners set a date for the public to speak out on a $160 million school bond referendum
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
The public will have a chance to speak out on an upcoming bond referendum during the New Hanover County Commissioners meeting Monday, August 11 at 4 p.m.
Officials asked to put a $160 million school bond in front of voters in November, which Commissioners approved in June. The funds are designed to pay for more than a dozen projects, including rebuilding College Park and Blair Elementary schools and building one new school.
Commissioners also approved of the school system buying property in the Castle Hayne area, which will be used while some of construction is going on with the bond referendum projects. It is the former site of The Rock Church, at 5301 Sidberry Road.
The building could serve as a site for students while work is done on Blair Elementary and College Park Elementary. Plans then call for the school system to use the building as a middle school or ninth grade center for Laney High School.
Price of the property is $3.6 million, paid for out of the school system's fund balance.
