WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating several car break-ins that were reported at Greenfield Lake over the weekend.
Police believe people are targeting walkers or joggers who park and then exercise around the lake. It appears the suspects pry open the car windows when the individuals park and leave the area, causing them to shatter.
According to police, the suspects are taking things like purses, wallets and other items that are left visible in the vehicles.
Police are encouraging people not to leave valuables in your car, especially in plain sight. Car owners are also reminded to lock their doors.
According to police, crime statistics show that 67 percent of the cars broken into so far in 2014 were left unlocked at the time of the crime. More than 490 vehicles have been broken into this year.
