BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WECT) -

Emmett Ballree, the former police chief in Boiling Spring Lakes has pleaded guilty to willfully failing to discharge his duties as a police officer in the District Court of Brunswick County.

According to District Attorney Jon David, the case stemmed from allegations that Ballree allowed his son, a convicted felon, to possess and fire a fully automatic suppressed firearm under his supervision at a law enforcement firing range.

David said Ballree was immediately relieved of his duties after that event. He has not been employed in law enforcement since his arrest in 2011.

His son, Michael Ballree Jr., was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon resulting from the same investigation. He was convicted of that offense July 24, 2013.
