Sometime over the next several months, we will find out the identity of the next chancellor of UNC Wilmington. Everyone agrees this is an important position in our community. But a small group of people are tasked with determining who that person is.
I understand this is the process the UNC Board of Governors uses when selecting leaders at these state institutions. But is there a better way?
We learned with outgoing chancellor Gary Miller's very public job search that other states do it differently…and maybe better. Miller was a finalist for jobs in New York, Ohio and Wisconsin. It appeared to me that there was much more community involvement.
I understand the need for privacy at the front end of this search. But when we're down to a handful of finalists, it would be refreshing to see the Board of Governors open the process. Bring the candidates in. Let the community meet them and talk with them.
With all the controversy at UNCW over the past year, it would be nice to see this system reach out to Wilmington to try to bring back a little sense of community in this incredibly important decision.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at email@example.com.
