Businessman and philanthropist Edward Gore died in his sleep at his home in Sunset Beach Tuesday night.
Ed Gore had only recently celebrated his 82nd birthday.
Ed Gore and his family were instrumental in the development of Sunset Beach in Brunswick County. Ed's father Mannon Gore bought Bald Beach in 1955, the year after Hurricane Hazel devastated the coastline. Ed Gore went on to develop Ocean Ridge Plantation and other properties.
Ed served on several boards, commissions and service organizations, including Director of the Brunswick Community College Foundation.
The school's Fitness and Aquatics Center bears the name of his wife, Dinah, who is also active in the community. Ed also donated millions of dollars to Campbell University, his alma mater.
In 2009, the football field on the campus in Buies Creek was dedicated to Ed Gore to honor his dedication and generosity to the university.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 20 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Brunswick Funeral Services, 5229 Ocean Highway West in Shallotte.
Funeral services for Ed Gore will take place Monday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Seaside Methodist Church, 1300 Seaside Rd SW, in Sunset Beach.
