Police arrest Elizabethtown man for attempted first degree murder

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WECT) -

Elizabethtown Police arrested a man for attempted first degree murder after a shooting sends one victim to the hospital Sunday morning.

According to police, officers heard gunshots in the area of Della Street and James Street around 1:40 a.m. while responding to a pedestrian struck call.

When police arrived, they found subjects in the area and shell casings in the street.

During the investigation, officers learned that a shooting victim arrived at Bladen County Hospital.

According to officials, the victim was standing in a yard talking with some people when another group walked by. The two groups had a heated exchange which led to the shooting.

Officers arrested Marcus Orlando Smith, 26, and charged him with attempted first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Smith remains in the Bladen County jail under a $550,000 secured bond.
