Special Olympics athlete brings gold home to Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Special Olympics Athlete Joann Ballat, took the gold medal in Bocce at the Special Olympics National Games in Trenton, NJ.
Joann is a Shallotte native and is a student at the Brunswick Interagency Program at Brunswick Community College.
She currently works at the BCC cafeteria and has been a long time Special Olympics athlete in Brunswick County. She was selected as a bocce athlete by Special Olympics, NC to represent the 50 member Team NC at the 2014 Special Olympics National Games, which were held on June 15-22, 2014.
Joann won gold in team and singles events and won silver in the doubles event.
"In preparation for National Games, Joann practiced weekly with her coach, Edith Caraway, for several months," said Steve Goodwin, BC Special Olympics Coordinator. "Joann's outstanding results at the games represent all of the hard work and dedication she put in to her preparation. Joanne is now the number one bocce player in Special Olympics USA. We are all very proud of her!"
