ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Onslow County Sheriff deputies arrested a homeless Jacksonville man for a kidnapping early Saturday.

According to the Onslow County Sheriff's Office, around 1:50 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to a residence in reference to a kidnapping.

According to the victim, she had dropped some of her friends off at a motel at NC 24 and Western Boulevard. While at the motel, the victim said she had gone to a friend's room to use the restroom.

When the victim returned to her vehicle there was a male suspect sitting in the passenger seat.

The victim approached the suspect to ask why he was sitting in her vehicle, leading to the suspect pointing a handgun at her face and demanding that she drive him to the Circle K on Highway 17 at the Marine Corps Air Station.

As the victim and suspect arrived at the Circle K, the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran away.

Approximately three hours later, deputies located and arrested the suspect, 29-year-old Garrick Cale-Leighton Freitas, a homeless man from Jacksonville, approximately three miles from the Circle K.

The victim was not hurt during the incident.

Officials charged Freitas with second degree kidnapping and assault by pointing a gun. Freitas is currently being held in the Onslow County Jail under a $40,000 secured bond.

Investigators found that Freitas has other criminal activities with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office dating back to 2012.
