The FBI held an active shooter training at Independence Mall Sunday evening.
According to Special Agent Aaron Seres, an active shooter incident lasts approximately 12 minutes.
Several agencies including New Hanover County Sheriffs Office, Wilmington Police Department and the FBI were training to be prepared if a real life situation occurs.
Between 70 and 80 first responders participated in the training, which lasted until early in the morning.
From a public safety perspective, the FBI is recommending a three part response to this emergency: Run, Hide and Fight.
The FBI holds these training sessions once per year across the country.
This year, according to Seres, Wilmington law enforcement was ready and eager to train and learned best communication practices for this type of event.
