The North Carolina Department of Transportation is planning to hold a public hearing on the project to build a new bridge to Topsail Island, replacing the Swing Bridge.

NCDOT representatives say the Swing Bridge, which was built in the 1950's, needs to be replaced.  They say the new bridge will improve traffic and create wider travel lanes for all vehicles. They argue it will also help with boat traffic, and minimize delays. Additionally, representatives say the new proposed bridge would include access for pedestrians and bicycles.

The hearing will take place on Tuesday, July 29th at the Topsail Island Moose Lodge, located at 13175 N Carolina 50 in Holly Ridge.

An informal open house will take place from 3:30 until 6:30 p.m. NCDOT representatives will be on hand to answer questions and also take comments about the new bridge project.

The public hearing will begin at 7 p.m. with a formal presentation by NCDOT about the project. People will also be able to ask questions and offer comments following the presentation.

All written and verbal comments will be recorded and all will carry the same weight.

NCDOT also released a finalized map of where the bridge would go.
