PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
One person died and two others were taken to the hospital following an accident on Interstate 40 that closed lanes shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday.
According to Pender County Highway Patrol, around 10:45 p.m. two people were waiting by a truck with a tow dolly that was loading an abandoned van on the eastbound lane of I-40 near mile marker 393. Officials say that the truck did not have any lights on.
A Cadillac driving down the eastbound lane of I-40 hit the abandoned van, resulting in the van hitting the truck, which spun around and pinned one person between the truck and the van.
The other person standing next to the truck was hit out of the way by the van.
After the collision, the Cadillac and the van broke out in flames with the person still pinned between the two vehicles. That person died on scene.
The driver of the Cadillac and the other person standing next to the truck were taken to the hospital. There is no word on the extent of their injuries at this time.
As of this report, the name of the person who died has not been released.
There is no word on any charges being filed at this time.
