Southport writer Flora Solomon never intended for eyes around the world to read her first novel.
"I never planned on publishing this book," Solomon said. "I wrote it because I enjoyed the story and the whole writing process."
But after writing day after day for eight years, she decided to let the world read her book, A Pledge of Silence.
"It took me eight years to write this book because I probably wrote it three times before I was happy with it," Solomon said.
After self-publishing her novel, Solomon turned another page and applied for Amazon.com Inc.'s $50,000 "Breakthrough Novel Award."
When the 10,000 applicants turned into five finalists, Solomon couldn't believe her novel was on the list.
"I didn't expect it to go so far in this contest, but I've had a lot of support in this community," she exclaimed. "It took a few days before it really sunk in."
Amazon customers will now write their own conclusion by voting online for one of the five finalists until July 18.
Regardless of what the results say on July 24, Solomon says she'll continue writing. She's already working on a second novel.
The five novelists competing for the $50,000 contract are:
