Katrina Redmon, the new Wilmington Housing Authority CEO, made her first public appearance in the Port City Thursday afternoon.
Prior to joining the WHA, Redmon served as Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Director, and most recently the President/Chief Development Officer of the Winston-Salem authority.
Redmon said that her experience in housing as well as her background as a CPA well help her perform well for the WHA.
In her first 100 days on the job, Redmon said she will be working to establish partnerships with the Wilmington City Council, New Hanover County Board of County Commissioners, as well as other local organizations.
Redmon said the public housing system in place with the WHA is impressive. She said she could not speak on how her work with WHA will compare to that of the previous administration under former CEO Michael Krause, but is looking to bring new ideas to the table.
"This entity needs to be very transparent. We need to have open and honest conversations about where we are, who we are, what the needs of this community are and then see what we need to put in place," Redmon said.
Krause was removed from his position in 2013 after receiving his second DWI. Redmon said she is aware of the crime concerns that come with public housing.
She said a lot of crime prevention has to do with necessary lighting, site design and accessibility for the housing communities. Redmon is looking to establish a close relationship with the local law enforcement agencies.
Redmon will officially begin working with the WHA August 4.
