COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

A police chase that began early Thursday morning in Columbus County ended in a fiery crash in South Carolina.

Travis Lavont Walters, 34, of Green Sea, SC failed to slow down when approaching a license check at the intersection of Hwy. 904 E. and Peacock Rd. around 12:30 a.m., according to Lt. Jeremy Barber of the Columbus County Sheriff's Office.

Walters turned down a side road and sped away, Barber said.

Deputies pursued Walters but ended the chase shortly after entering South Carolina and notifying authorities in that state.

After ending the pursuit, the Columbus County deputies continued searching the area for the vehicle.

They saw Walters' car on fire in a ditch on Prospect Road in Loris. A man identified as Mr. Cox said the car crashed into a tree in front of his home and knocked it over.

Cox said he was woken up by the crash and ran outside with a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, but police arrived before he did.

WMBF reported that one person was taken to the a local trauma center via helicopter. That person's condition was unknown.

Barber said Walters was facing charges in South Carolina. He was unsure if Columbus County authorities would file charges.
