New tool helps fight online sexual predators

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Last year,  the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) worked over 4,000 online sexual predator investigations.

ICE logged almost one million hours working over 4,000 online sexual predator investigations. ICE said the best way to prevent sexual exploitation of children is education.  But how do you approach such a dark and disturbing topic with young children?

The goal of iGuardian is to make that conversation and process easier.

Our cyber expert, Theresa Payton, has reviewed the program, supports it, and has some tips on how to use Project iGuardian:

HOW IT WORKS:

1.  You can request to have iGuardian talk at your kid's school or to address the parents.

Law enforcement officers will provide in person tips, by age group, on how to spot and how to avoid online sexual predators

To ask for a presentation, email iguardian@ice.dhs.gov.

2.  A great way to learn is through interactive games.  Try NetSmartzKids.org.  This site offers videos and games on this topic and more.

3.  (We have covered this app before but this is a good reminder!) Download the Operation Predator app (available on iTunes).

The Operation Predator app was designed to seek the public's help in tracking down suspect child predators.

4.  Keep this number handy to report any suspicious online or offline behavior:  (866) 347-2423
